The snow conditions in Morzine, Avoriaz and Les Gets are nothing short of epic but at the moment with the slow start to the season and the huge amount of snow that has recently fallen the avalanche risk is quite high.   It’s worth having a look at the warning system so you know what to expect!  You might have come across the avalanche warning signs around the mountain and in town, but what do they really mean?

The avalanche warning system works on a simple series of numbers from 1 – 5, 5 being the highest risk.

There are many factors involved with calculating the risk of avalanche such as the gradient of the slope, the temperature fluctuations over the winter, how much snow has fallen and even which way the slope is facing whether towards the sun or in the shade!  With all that in mind we figure it’s much better to let the professionals do their job and let us know what’s what when it comes to going off piste…

If you’re not sure what it means here is a break down number by number:

Remember it’s not advisable to wander off piste without the correct equipment such as a transceiver, shovel and a probe or an air bag.  Even with the equipment, you are still never 100% safe and it’s always wise to get a local experienced guide to ensure you have the best and safest time in the mountains!
